A quaint wildflower of the alpine regions of Europe, Asia, and northwestern North America, this small, fuzzy-leaved, sometimes short-lived herbaceous perennial produces lots of flowers in the end of spring.
Plants form low tufted clumps of fuzzy, oblong, light green leaves. Dense clusters of five-petaled flowers appear on compact stems from mid-spring to as late as early summer, depending on conditions. The fragrant flowers are followed by tiny nutlets containing seeds that germinate in fall or the following spring.
Grow this charming perennial in full sun (in cool summer areas) to partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. It does poorly in hot climates. Overly fertile soils results in coarse, larger leaves that reduce the plant's charm.
Plant is perfect for nooks and crannies in rock gardens, mixed borders, or stone terraces.
