This Californian annual blooms just eight weeks after sowing, with flowers in a particularly rich shade of gentian blue and held clear of the pretty foliage to create a carpet of opulent colour. They will often continue for the whole season, although hot weather may curtail flowering. An extra sowing in summer is a wise insurance, either direct where plants are to grow, or in pots or trays which do not involve root disturbance at planting time. Autumn sowing is feasible, too, for earlier flowers.
