Hollyhock is a tall, short-lived, herbaceous perennial native to western Asia. In summer, large rosettes of characteristically rough, hairy leaves give rise to very tall, leafy stalks lined with flowers of rose, yellow, red, pink.
All hollyhocks are highly attractive to butterflies and bees and thrive in full sun and moderately fertile soil with good drainage. This old-fashioned flower makes an excellent addition to cottage gardens and mixed borders. Plants often require staking, and are highly susceptible to powdery mildew and Japanese beetle predation.
