Native to tropical Asia.
Job’s tears receives its name from the hard shiny tear-shaped structures that enclose the seed kernels. Those beadlike pseudocarps are sometimes used for jewelry and rosaries.
Forms of the plant are cultivated as a cereal crop in parts of East Asia and in the Philippines (in its native environment it is grown in higher areas where rice and corn do not grow well), and its edible grains are sometimes marketed as Chinese pearl barley in the West. It is also grown as a garden ornamental.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Pre-soak seeds for 2 hours in warm water and sow February/March in a greenhouse or inside in pots.
The seed usually germinates in 3 - 4 weeks at +25C.
Then they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots.
Grow them on in cool conditions and plant out in late spring after the last expected frosts.
Seed can also be sown in site in May though it would be unlikely to ripen its seed in an average British summer.
In a suitable climate, it takes about 4 - 5 months from seed to produce new seed.
