Mexican cucumber (Melothria scabra) is a very interesting plant of the gourd family, which is mainly grown both under cover and in the ground, as well as on balconies and terraces. Due to the appearance of the fruit, it is also called tsukamelon, mini watermelon.
In areas with a cooler climate it is an annual plant that is very sensitive to cold (like other cucumbers). Despite this - it is grown mainly as a climbing plant for creating green walls on balconies, terraces, near fences, pergolas, etc.
The fruits are edible. Their taste can be compared to a combination of cucumber and lime. Hard, crunchy, fresh and sour. They are mostly eaten fresh as a snack or as an addition to salads. Suitable for pickling.
The fruits of Mexican cucumbers contain a number of valuable elements and vitamins C, E, K, beta-carotene, mineral salts (potassium), fibers.
