The needle-like leaves of Arend's saxifrage are distinctive and provide a soft backdrop for its pink flowers. A tight, clump-forming, usually evergreen perennial, this is a hybrid developed by Arends Nursery of Ronsdorf, Germany.
The plant grows in tight rosettes of leaves, gathered in clumps. The rosettes are made by flat sprays of needle-like, bright-green leaves. In mid to late spring, thin stems rise high above the foliage and open to five-petalled flowers that range in color from white to pink or red.
Excellent as an alpine plant for a rockery or trough, it will become a lovely groundcover in a short time if growing conditions are perfect.
Grow Arend's saxifrage in partial sun to partial shade exposures in a moist, well-drained, gritty soil. Resentful of drought, exposure to cold winds and soggy conditions, this perennial tends to rot in summer if heat and humidity are too high. If given full sun, it must have constant moisturet. Cut off stems once the flowers fade, and divide clumps before summer heat sets in.
