Ornamental cabbages are grown primarily as foliage plants for their intensely colored leaves rather than as vegetables.
Ornamental cabbage typically develops curly, ruffled leaves in a tight rosette. Leaf colors are usually quite showy, including white/cream, pink, rose, red and purple.
A very easily grown plant, succeeding in full sun in a well-drained fertile preferably alkaline soil. Prefers a heavy soil.
Succeeds in any reasonable soil. Shade tolerant, growing well on a north border. Succeeds in maritime garden.
Tolerates a pH in the range 4.2 to 8.3. A very hardy plant, tolerating temperatures down to about -15°c.
It also tolerates high summer temperature.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Indoor sowing:
1. Sow from March to May in trays of moist compost.
2. Sow thinly and cover with a fine layer of compost.
3. Keep at +13C. Seedlings appear in 7-21 days.
4. Transplant 25 cm apart in final position after the last frost.
Outdoor sowing:
1. Sow from April to June in a prepared seed bed.
2. Sow thinly in rows 25 cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Keep moist.
