The pretty blooms of this tried and true early perennial offer old-fashioned elegance to perennial gardens.
Peachleaf bellflower is a rhizomatous perennial originating from Russia, Asia and Eastern Europe. It forms spreading rosettes of lance-shaped leaves that give rise to tall leafy stems in early summer. The willowy stems are lined with large, open, bell-shaped blooms of lavender-blue.
Deadheading will encourage plants to rebloom, but fewer flowers are produced the second time around.
This bellflower grows nicely in sites with full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. Later in the season it offers little ornamental value, so it’s best planted with annuals and perennials that are pretty in late summer and fall. This old-fashioned perennial is ideal for cottage gardens and sunny perennial borders. Its flowers are also good for cutting.
