The fragrant, furry foliage of Persian catmint is pleasing to smell and see, as are the short spikes of tiny lavender blossoms that appear in summer, attracting bees and butterflies. A sprawling, herbaceous perennial native to Turkey, Iran and the Caucusus Region, it is known to self-seed voraciously.
The leaves are rounded, heart-shaped andmid-green to slightly gray-green because of the tiny hairs on their surfaces. Leaf edges may be scalloped. In summer, whorled clusters of small trumpet-like lavender, light blue or blue-violet flowers bloom on upright stems. Once pollinated by insects, the plant produces seeds in abundance. They drop to the ground and readily germinate to form a groundcover colony of plants.
Grow Persian catmint in average to well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. To encourage a second flowering, shear off the spent flower spikes. This also reduces self-seeding. This plant makes for a nice, aromatic groundcover for rockeries and herb gardens, containers and woodland edges.
