Arguably, there is no better perennial for shade. Hosta is a clump forming herbaceous ornamental grown mostly for its attractive foliage. The genus originates from Asia and is comprised of approximately 40 species and thousands of hybrid cultivars.
Throughout the growing season they present clumps of foliage in various shades of green, blue, blue-gray or gold. Some also have variegated markings of white, cream or gold. Their flowers are variable, but are generally trumpet, funnel or bell-shaped and appear on tall, sturdy stems. These may be lavender or white and appear from spring to fall, depending on the variant.
Overall, Hosta grow best in partially shaded sites and tolerate a wide range of soil types. They are best used in shaded perennial gardens or massed as a groundcover. (info source: Learn2Grow.com)

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Dampen seed-starting potting mix with water until it is moist. Fill a large, oven-safe container with the potting mix. Cover the potting mix with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and place the potting mix into the oven for 30 minutes. Heating the potting mix in the oven will sterilize it so that all insects and diseases within the soil are killed. Young hosta seedlings are susceptible to pests and fungi. A sterile environment is necessary for optimal growth.
2. Put rubber gloves on your hands. Plug the kitchen sink and add 10 cups of warm water. Add one cup of bleach to the water, and sterilize the seed-starting tray in the solution by lightly sloshing it around to cover all areas. Rinse the tray with hot water and dry it with paper towels.
3. Moisten the oven-sterilized potting mix with water to make it more manageable. Fill the seed-starting tray full with the potting mix.
4. Create small indentations with a pencil eraser, about 1/4 inch deep, on the top of the soil, spaced 2 inches apart. Place one seed each indentation. Cover the hosta seeds lightly with a thin layer of potting mix.
5. Cover the tray with the included clear dome and place it in a warm location, where temperatures maintain above 65F (+18-+20C).
6. Keep the potting mix moist with water during the one to two weeks it takes for the hosta seeds to germinate. Ensure you time the germination period correctly to avoid planting the hosta seddlings outdoors before the last frost.
7. Remove the clear dome for a longer amount of time everyday when the first leaf appears on the hosta seedlings.
8. Snip the weaker hosta seedlings off at soil level when they have developed at least three leaves.
9. Plant the hosta seedling in an area that receives partial shade and well-draining soil. Add a slow-release fertilizer to the hosta's planting holes according to the product instructions. Use a spoon to scoop the individual hosta seedling out of the tray, and place them into their planting holes.
10. Spread 1/4-inch layer of sand around the hosta seedlings to protect them from mold and gnats. Water the hosta seedlings at the soil level -- once or twice a week -- to keep the soil moist. (info source: eHow.com)
