Hypericum perforatum is a short lived herbaceous or semiwoody perennial sub-shrub that grows in an open, bushy clump up to 2-3 ft (0.6-1.2 cm) tall and 2 ft (0.6 m) across.
This variety needs to be transplanted. The whole herbage is harvested for drying the main flowering time. Two harvests are possible in a year.
Uses: the ingredients stimulate digestion. As tea for nervous strains, slight depressions, insomnia. Diuretic and stimulant to gallbladder. The flowers are used to red oil production. The oil is used to cure wounds, sprains, neuralgia and rheumatism.
Perforate St. John's wort blooms profusely throughout the summer and fall, producing clusters of bright yellow star shaped flowers. The flowers have five black-dotted petals and many prominent yellow stamens which collectively look like fine bristles of a brush. The foliage has a peculiar, distinctive odor and a bitter taste. When crushed, the flower petals may exude a red-colored oil.
Use perforate St. John's worts in a perennial border or in a rock garden. This and most of the St. John's worts are ideal subshrubs for the natural garden. Like most species in the genus, this one blooms over a long period and can be expected to self sow.
Easily grown in any reasonably good well-drained but moisture retentive soil. Succeeds in dry soils.
Plants grow well in sun or semi-shade but they flower better when in a sunny position. St. John's wort is often found as a weed in the garden. It grows well in the summer meadow and is a useful plant for attracting insects.
The whole plant, especially when in bloom, gives off a most unpleasant smell when handled.
