Hardy to zone 9, but can be grown as an indoors plant in cooler climates, but it will be less in size.
Grown as an ornamental, its touch-sensitive leaves create interest among adults and children alike, helping to inspire interest in plant life generally. It has many traditional medicinal uses.
Pretty puff-ball flowers of pink and fern-like leaves that quickly fold once touched: the sensitive plant is a wonder of the plant world. A tender perennial that becomes semi-woody in frost-free regions, it is often short-lived and is most popularly grown as an annual.
The leaves are bright green to gray-green in color and are shaped like a four-fingered hand. Each of these lobes is densely lined with tiny leaflets. At night or whenever the foliage it touched, it quickly folds up. The leaves are held on prickly reddish brown stems that can grown upright and branch, but often are more sprawling. In the warmth of summer small pink flowers that look like pompons appear. They become flat, brown, bristled pods that will cling to animal fur or clothing.
Grow sensitive plant in full or partial sun in any well-draining soil. Tolerant of nutrient poor (rocky, lean) soils, it should be moist in the growing season and allowed to be slightly drier in the winter. If grown as an annual, it easily adapts and prospers in typical garden conditions as long as there is no frost and soil is never soggy. Grow it as a container, hanging basket or accent plant in a mixed border. Position it so that people can delight and witness in the reaction of the leaves to a touch.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Place your seeds in a container of warm water and let them soak overnight before you plant your seeds. This will help them to sprout faster. Clear plastic wrap helps the seeds sprout faster by keeping in heat and moisture.
In a flower pot or cup of soil, plant your seeds 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep. Cover the flower pot or cup with clear plastic wrap. Important- the clear wrap must be removed as soon as your sensitive plant begins to grow.
Place your baby sensitive plants in a warm and mostly sunny location with temperature +20-+25C (70-85F). The clear wrap or greenhouse cover must be removed once the sensitive plant seeds have sprouted and popped above the soil. Water enough to keep soil from drying out completely - itl should be kept evenly moist but not saturated. During the growing season, the plant are fertilized on a weekly basis with a balanced fertilizer diluted to ½ the strength recommended on the label. During the winter months, fertilize on a monthly basis. Winter temperatures should not fall below +18C (65F); if they do get chilled, then the plant suffers with yellowing of leaves and stems.
