The Swedish whitebeam is originally from Scandinavia and the Baltics. It is found in Europe in temperate zones as a park, city and street tree frequently.
Swedish whitebeam (Sorbus intermedia) is a small deciduous tree characterized by leaves with grey hairs on the underside, giving the tree a silvery appearance. The tree is a triple hybrid among the European mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia), wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) and whitebeam (Sorbus aria). It is native to north-western Europe but has long been cultivated and is now naturally found in other parts of Europe.
The wood is suitable for tool handles but not of any commercial importance. The tree’s flowers provide nectar for insects and its fruits are consumed and dispersed by various birds. Due to the tree’s tolerance to air-pollution and its ornamental value, it is often planted along streets in urban areas.
Swedish whitebeam grows in a wide range of soil types, as long as they are rich and well-drained. The tree is particularly suitable for exposed and coastal sites, preferably in spots with plenty of light.
