A large and fast-growing evergreen tree that can reach up to 100 meters in height under ideal conditions. Native to southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. The trunk is straight, tall with smooth, mottled bark that splits in long strips, revealing patches of white, bluish-gray, and brownish bark underneath.
The leaves are lanceolate, glossy, dark green bluish, arranged alternately along the branches. When crushed, it has a strong eucalyptus smell.
It blooms with white-cream colored flowers with many stamens. The flowers are arranged in bunches or inflorescences. Attracts pollinating insects and birds.
Unfortunately, it is a zone 8+ plant, so it does not overwinter in our cooler climates. It is grown only as a potted plant, which spends the summer in sunny areas of the garden or terrace, and when the weather cools down, it moves to warm and bright indoor rooms. Thus, it grows up to 2 meters high, is cut and pruned, and the leaves - green and dried - are used for flavoring.
This eucalyptus species is one of the most important economically cultivated species in the world. It is grown for various purposes including timber and ornamental. Wood is highly valued for its strength, durability and versatility. It is mostly used in construction, flooring, furniture and paper production. The wood is pale in color and is often referred to in the timber industry as 'Tasmanian Oak'.
